Girl Boss Spotlight: Meet Dacia Petrie

She’s the creator of Black Nile, an online marketplace with a mobile app designed to shop a directory of Black owned businesses.

Using her background in technology and experience in web design, Dacia has revolutionized the way we shop online. Curating a marketplace that profiles over 3000 businesses owned by Black entrepreneurs, the platform features a diverse range of products across 40 catagories.

After noticing the lack of Black-owned directories that were user-friendly allowing for easy navigation on mobile devices, Petrie was inspired to find a solution and got to work designing the innovative digital storefront. Getting it’s start on Instagram, the app has now garnered over 60,000 shoppers.

Many of the listed business owners have sold out of products following the apps success and some users have even made the switch from major retail options to the Black Nile. “I created this with the intention to make shopping with Black-owned businesses as easy as possible,” says Dacia.

Her social media pages give detailed instructions on how to download and start shopping on the app. From there, users can support some of their favorite Black entrepreneurs as well as discover new brands

The directory of product brands covers everything from luxury fashion and beauty to grocery stores, hotels and household goods. A google integration also allows users to easily locate nearby businesses and utilize a review function to share their experience.

“I am Dacia Petrie,

a multi-hyphenate visionary hailing from the luminous shores of Jamaica. Black Nile was conceived with a mission to amplify authentic representation of the African Diaspora, and bridge the global racial wealth gap, one business idea at a time. At just 17 years old, I was a radical dreamer who fervently believed God gave me the power to make a difference in reshaping the future of the oppressed—and I have never wavered in that conviction. Today, that dream has blossomed into reality, where I strive to elevate deserving black-owned businesses within the global marketplace and invest in entrepreneurs that exemplify kingdom excellence.”

Black business owners interested in joining the app’s directory community can visit the Nile’s the Add Your Business tab.
